Germany: Bayern win Bundesliga in dramatic season end

Let's explore how a dramatic day in Germany resulted in Dortmund missing out on the title in a heartbreaking fashion.

1. FC Köln 1 - 2 Bayern Munich

How did this match unfold? It was a very dramatic end. Cologne penalty had cancelled out Kingsley Coman's earlier strike, but an 89th minute winner from Musiala sent the away fans wild.

Many Bayern fans probably feared they had blown their opportunity when Cologne's Dejan Ljubicic levelled from the penalty spot with just nine minutes remaining. It was at this time when Dortmund were still chasing a goal but Bayern's win meant they had done all they can.

Once their match ended, the attention of everyone turned to what was going on in Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund 2 - 2 Mainz 05

Dortmund led by two points going into the final day but a 2-2 draw at home to Mainz allowed Bayern to win the title in dramatic circumstances.

The home fans had turned up for a party but they were stunned as Mainz raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time. Sebastian Haller also had a penalty saved for the hosts. You sensed it wasn't going to be their day.

After pulling a goal back through Raphael Guerreiro, Dortmund thought they had been handed a reprieve when Cologne levelled against Bayern Munich with nine minutes left. However, that 89th-minute Bayern goal meant they needed two more. They only managed one. A 96th-minute goal from Süle wasn't enough.

It was heartbreak for Dortmund. Bayern were champions again.

What did the managers think?

It had been a strange season for Bayern Munich. The surprise sacking of Julian Nagelsmann in late March and the arrival of Thomas Tuchel did not result in immediate success with the team crashing out of the German Cup and the UEFA Champions League last eight.

The Bayern board is due to meet at the end of this month to decide what their plans are going forward. For Tuchel himself, he was sacked by Chelsea and probably didn't think he'd get another top job this season.

For Borussia Dortmund, their manager Edin Terzic was in tears as the Yellow Wall chanted his name in support. Check out the video below for some of the reaction after the match. The chant afterwards was: “If you win and stand top, or if you lose and stand at the bottom, we’ll still sing: Borussia, BVB!”
