Scotland: Rangers announce Jermain Defoe has left the club

Defoe made his final appearance for Rangers back in November

He joined initially on loan from Bournemouth back in 2019 and made his stay permanent the following year.

The former England striker scored 32 goals in 74 Rangers appearances and helped the side win last season's Scottish Premiership.

Sporting Director, Ross Wilson, spoke about Defoe on the club website: “Jermain has made a significant contribution to Rangers over the last number of seasons.

“Even in the ‘twilight years’ of his career, he has shown the expert movement and finishing ability that took him to the very top in his career. His contribution within the training centre was excellent, as he became a role model for his peers, showing professionalism on a daily basis."

This is how the Rangers Twitter account announced the departure.

One fan replied: " Jermain Defoe will always be one of us. It was a pleasure to watch this master of his craft playing in a Rangers shirt. Thank you Jermain, best of luck in your future endeavours and who knows, you may be back someday, wouldn’t that be grand! What a wonderful human being."

Another added: "Surely trying to keep him as a coach would have been the ideal scenario?  Can only think the experience he could have brought to our academy. He would have helped produce some great prospects for the future."
