FA Cup: Man United hold on to beat Aston Villa

Manchester United 1 - 0 Aston Villa

Scott McTominay's early header proved enough for Manchester United to beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

McTominay was allowed to run into the Villa six-yard box, where he met Fred's superb cross to steer the ball past Emiliano Martinez.

This meant Villa boss and former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard faced an unhappy return to Manchester, where he was baited by the home supporters. Some have argued that the result was harsh on Gerrard and his Villa side.

VAR controversy

The controversial moment of the game came with an offside and VAR decision in the second-half.
Villa put the ball in the back of the net but what followed was a lengthy wait for the video assistant referee to ask Michael Oliver to make the final decision by consulting the screen.

After a delay of several minutes, the referee eventually ruled Jacob Ramsey was offside, saying that he had impeded Edinson Cavani in the build-up. What did you think of the decision? Watch the video below and decide for yourself.

Reaction

Ralf Rangnick was pleased with the intensity levels on display by his Manchester United website. He told ManUtd.com: "I think everybody expected a reaction to the Wolves game. I think the team showed a reaction. We didn't miss out on intensity, but we still had difficult moments in the game.

"First half, I thought, was good. We played a lot of diagonal balls; we kept the Villa team moving from one side to the other, scored a beautiful goal, but on the other hand, we were still struggling to get control in midfield. We knew that they are very flexible, Villa, with their midfield, with their two no.10s and their three no.6s and no.8s, so at times we were struggling."

He also explained why some players were missing from the United squad.

The Aston Villa Twitter account posted the thoughts of Steven Gerrard after the match: " "I've seen enough tonight to be positive about, even though I'm frustrated to go out of the competition."

They also posted: " It wasn't to be, but your support was immense from start to finish. Thank you and we'll see you back at Villa Park on Saturday."
