New Avro boss Alex Frost began his managerial career with a win and a clean sheet as Avro stayed fifth in the Premier Division table.

They picked up a 2-0 victory against Lower Breck at the Anfield Sports and Community Centre.

With both Lewis Lacy and Liam Ellis serving suspensions after their red cards last weekend and James Dwyer injured, the new man in charge paired Kyle Jacobs with Sam Rathbone at the heart of the defence and added Jack Morrow to the midfield. The only other change saw Louis Potts start up front in place of Oumar Camara, who dropped to the bench.

The opening quarter of an hour was fairly even, with no clear cut chances for either side. However, Avro took the lead when Potts pursued Rathbone’s long clearance, forcing a mistake by home centre half Sam Finley before smashing the ball past keeper Josh Mollloy from twelve yards for his 13th goal of the season, but his first since early October.

Rathbone might have doubled the lead before the interval when his header from a deep corner by Kyle Harrop beat Molloy but was cleared off the line by a Lower Breck defender. Callum Nicholas also went close with a long-range effort that whistled just over the bar, but it took until the 67th minute for the all-important second goal to arrive, and when it did come, it was a beauty.

Potts timed his run perfectly to get on the end of Jake Cottrell’s inch-perfect through ball, and his cross from the left along the edge of the six-yard box left substitute Michael Afuye with the simplest of finishes at the far post.

Reaction

Alex Frost said: "We knew that Lower Breck were going to have a lot of possession, so we wanted to keep a good shape, not let them get in behind us, basically just to frustrate them and hit them on the counter attack."

Lower Breck's Twitter account posted: " Disappointing defeat in what was a poor game overall…Game spoilt by the penalty & sin bin that followed best not say too much more on that…!!!!…The chips are certainly down at the moment but we have to keep working hard behind the scenes to make it right."
