FA Cup: Gateshead 0 - 2 Charlton

Charlton Athletic saw off a battling performance from National League North side Gateshead to reach the third round of the FA Cup.

Jayden Stockley opened the scoring for Charlton, heading home Conor Washington's cross in the 30th minute. They doubled their advantage after the break when Ben Purrington's volley deflected in off Stockley.

Gateshead created many chances, with forward Macauley Langstaff blazing wildly over the bar after a one-on-one with goalkeeper Stephen Henderson in the second half.

The official Gateshead account posted on Twitter: "We couldn’t be more proud. Thank you for your support."

Their manager added on ITV Sport: "I think the lads are very disappointed in there. But when all is said and done, I'm immensely proud.

"We didn't come away from our fundamentals and our process, and we kept going. It's what we've come to see with these boys, the endeavour and never give up attitude."

One Gateshead fan added: "I am just so very proud. It's a shame we didn't get into the draw for the next round and get a potential derby against Newcastle but there's always next year!"

Charlton caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson spoke with BBC Radio London after the match: "It wasn't an easy night's work, they're a good side and they caused us problems. But we're through and that's the most important thing."
