PL: Southampton 1 - 0 Aston Villa

Adam Armstrong's early goal helped Southampton continue their revival in the Premier League

Aston Villa are clearly short on confidence. They got off to a disastrous start with Matt Cash failing to clear a long ball and Armstrong smashing in a sensational first-time effort from 20 yards. Watch the highlights in the video below.

You'd have to wonder if Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is starting to feel the pressure. He told BBC Sport: "We started [well] the first couple of minutes, then a cross hits Matty Cash on the bum and drops down for their lad who hits a superb half-volley to score. That knocked the stuffing out of us.

"When you're on a bad run, something like that is hard to take. They were the better team in the first half."

The Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl one the other hand was clearly delighted with his side's performance. They are now up to 12th in the Premier League table. Hasenhuttl told BBC Sport: "We came into half-time with a lot of energy, aggression against the ball. In the second half we had not our best game with the ball.

"The opponent was giving us a lot of pressure. Then you start struggling a bit. That’s why I had to change shape. We didn't play much football in the second half, we had the one chance from Che Adams."

Social media reaction

Let's have a look at some of the best social media reaction to this result.

Aston Villa's Tryone Mings tweeted: "We’re hurting, and we know everyone associated with this club is too. Togetherness has always been the foundation of any success we’ve had. We must keep that, especially in the tough times. Your support tonight was brilliant so thank you"

Southampton's Ché Adams posted: Three wins from four, the perfect way to sign off for the international break. What a strike Adam Armstrong! Enjoy your weekends!"
