La Liga news: Ronald Koeman sacked by Barcelona

Ronald Koeman’s spell as manager of Barvcelona came to an abrupt end after he was sacked following a 1-0 defeat at Rayo Vallecano.

This exit provides something of an unhappy conclusion for the former player. Koeman won them their first European Cup in 1992 and leaves the club in further turmoil on and off the field.

A statement on the Barcelona website reads:  “FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first-team coach,” an official club statement read after the 1-0 loss. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

"Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva. FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”

The last match

This defeat at Rayo Vallecano proved to be one too many. It was another awful performance from a side that is still struggling to cope with the departure of Lionel Messi and other star names. It was their fifth loss of the season in all competitions. They sit six points behind four-way leaders Real Madrid, Sevilla, Real Betis and Real Sociedad. You can see highlights from the match in the video below,

The next step

It has since been announced that Sergi Barjuan has been appointed as their interim coach following Ronald Koeman's sacking. Barjuan played as a left-back for Barcelona after coming through their academy and went on to win three league titles with the club.
