Fans voices: Why do we love football?

Image
A Manchester United tells us of his emotional connection to the club and why he is so frustrated with the current situation. This is the first article of our Fans Voice series. If you want to get involved, please message us on Twitter and we'll respond as soon as possible. My first United game was the last watched by the old Stretford End. We beat Tottenham 3-1 and was mesmerised by the sights and sounds. In the previous weeks, we had thrown away a lead at the top of old First Division and lost the title to Leeds United. My dad knew this would be my first game and thought it would be a title party, sadly he was mistaken. We only had to wait another year to finally clinch the title and we were both there as we celebrated winning the first-ever Premier League. I was slightly older so was able to appreciate things a bit more. Little did my and my dad know though but football was about to change forever. Domination but at what cost? Over the next six years, United would win everyth

FA Cup: United and Liverpool play out a classic

Image
Manchester United 4 - 3 Liverpool Manchester United secured their spot in the FA Cup semi-final after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. Before the game, everyone was talking about how strong Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool team was, but from the start, it was United who came out swinging with some serious attacking moves. Just 10 minutes in, Alejandro Garnacho took a shot that got deflected, Caoimhin Kelleher tried to save it, but it ended up right in the path of Scott McTominay. Old Trafford erupted.  Liverpool fought back hard , and just before halftime, they managed to sneak in a couple of goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, putting them at half-time. The second half was tense, with both teams hunting for that next crucial goal. It wasn't until the home side made some attacking changes, thanks to Ten Hag's tactical moves, that the home side started to put some pressure. They finally found the equaliser. Antony, coming off the bench, save

It's time to explore another football icon. This time it's Denis Law Denis Law had a fantastic career and many older fans of Manchester United still refer to him as The King of the Stretford End. Early Life of Denis Law He grew up in an Aberdeen Council Flat and was the youngest of six siblings. His dad George Law was a fisherman, and this fact would later feature in a chant created by Manchester United fans.  He supported Aberdeen and watched them on the terraces when he had the money to do so. He got his first pair of football boots as a teenager after receiving them as a present. The obsession with football led to Law turning down a place at the local grammar school as their sport of choice was Rugby.   The start of a glorious football career After being scouted by Huddersfield Town, he was eventually signed by the Yorkshire side in April 1955. Not long after, he had an operation to remove his quint. This greatly improved his self-confidence. Following Huddersfield’s r

Premier League: McTominay rescues Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 2 - 1 Brentford Manchester United pulled off a stunning comeback victory against Brentford at Old Trafford, with Scott McTominay emerging as the hero in stoppage time.  Initially, it seemed like Manchester United might suffer their third consecutive home league defeat for the first time since 1979, all thanks to Mathias Jensen's first-half goal. McTominay was a late substitute, coming on with only three minutes left on the clock as manager Erik ten Hag desperately searched for a lifeline. And the Scottish midfielder delivered spectacularly. He displayed impeccable control before slamming the ball into the net when Kristoffer Ajer mishandled a clearance inside his penalty area for the first goal. Then, following a save from Anthony Martial's low shot by Thomas Strakosha, McTominay reacted swiftly to a Harry Maguire flick and netted the priceless second goal. A turning point for Manchester United? The home fans continued their jubilation long after the fina

Premier League: Bad start for Man United

Image
Manchester United 1 - 2 Brighton & Hove Albion Brighton survived an onslaught to secure a first win at Old Trafford and condemn Erik ten Hag to a losing start as Manchester United manager. Pascal Gross' first-half double stunned the home supporters, who were desperate to see their team put a miserable end to last season behind them. United were outplayed in the opening period by Graham Potter's side, who beat them 4-0 at the Amex Stadium in May on their way to a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League, their highest in history. Brighton would ultimately go home happy again. Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo could deny the away side. United did threaten a comeback when a scramble inside the visitors' box ended with Alexis Mac Allister turning the ball into his own net after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had touched it into his path under pressure from several United players. Premier League: An awful Saturday for Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth Dominic Solanke's early strike set the stage for Bournemouth's historic triumph at Old Trafford, intensifying the scrutiny on beleaguered Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Bournemouth secured their first victory at Old Trafford with second-half headers from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi within a five-minute span, marking a memorable milestone in the club's history. United faced the prospect of an even more dismal outcome, but a late goal by substitute Dango Ouattara was disallowed by the video assistant referee for handball during stoppage time. This defeat comes just three days ahead of United's crucial Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, a match they must win to advance to the last 16. It compounds the woes for Ten Hag, who recently received the Premier League's Manager of the Month award. With seven defeats in 16 league games and an equal number of losses and wins in all competitions, United's form has b

Premier League: Man United and Leeds United produce a classic

Image
Manchester United 2 - 2 Leeds United Man United fought their way back from being two goals down to take a point against Leeds United at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford and substitute Jadon Sancho levelled Wilfried Gnonto’s first-minute strike and Raphael Varane’s own goal to move Erik ten Hag’s men three points ahead of Newcastle United in the Premier League table. The Reds got back into the game after a difficult 60 minutes. They recovered from the deficit with well-worked counter-attacks and a never-say-die attitude, epitomised by Luke Shaw, who was instrumental in Sancho’s goal to level the clash. After that, United dominated. The Leeds goal lived a charmed life at times. Fred and Fernandes missed efforts that could have brought the Old Trafford house down. Instead, Leeds held out for five minutes of stoppage time, doing well to kill our momentum on occasion, and will be the more pleased of the two sides with the outcome. What will happen when the sides meet again on Sunday? Highl

PL reaction: Manchester United 0 - 2 Manchester City

Image
Manchester City cruised to victory with almost embarrassing ease at Old Trafford. This Manchester City win was not as emphatic as Liverpool's magnificent 5-0 victory here in United's last home league game but City were far too comfortable. The pressure has only increased on the Manchester United manager.  Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke with the media after the game and said: "It’s very disappointing. Last week, it felt like we made a step forward, this is a big step backwards. It is a way of losing we don’t like. You want to see a better Man United than that. "When you concede the first goal in an unfortunate way as early as that it makes it difficult. They pressed us really well. We never got to the level we need to be at to beat good teams." United's Donny van de Beek tweeted:"A disappointing day. But your support means everything." View from the blues The reaction from everyone associated from Manchester City was obviously more positive. The Manch

Not long after, he suffered a rupture to his anterior cruciate knee ligaments during a training session, leaving him injured for a year. Eventual move and success at Manchester United In his first season at Old Trafford, he scored 36 goals in 49 appearances. One of his best performances came in a 3-2 FA Cup win over Ast

The home crowd turned against manager Erik ten Hag as Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brighton at Old Trafford. United fans have overwhelmingly supported Ten Hag since he arrived last summer, and they have backed him in his dispute with Jadon Sancho. A cacophony of boos rang around the stadium before Ten Hag was applauded off as he replaced new signing Rasmus Hojlund with Anthony Martial 19 minutes into the second period. After the match, United's Dutch manager defended this decision.  🚨🇩🇰 Erik Ten Hag on boos for subbing Hojlund: "It was positive. Crystal Palace: 23/24 Season Review

Image
It's time to explore Crystal Palace's 2023/2024 season. It marked Crystal Palace's 118th season and their eleventh consecutive campaign in the Premier League. They also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. It was the first season since 2013–14 without Wilfried Zaha, who departed for Turkish club Galatasaray in the summer, and Scottish midfielder James McArthur, who retired. As a result, Joel Ward was appointed club captain at the beginning of the season, replacing the departed Luka Milivojević. Despite being 15th and just 5 points above the relegation zone in mid-February, the appointment of Oliver Glasner revived the team's fortunes, and a strong finish saw the Eagles equal their highest league finish in the Premier League era. Let's examine some of the moments from another interesting year at Selhurst Park. In September, they were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Manchester United. They were beaten 3-0, and many fans criticised the weakened squad put out.  Un

Premier League: Palace win at Old Trafford again

Image
Manchester United 0 - 1 Crystal Palace Manchester United suffered their second consecutive home defeat in the Premier League as Crystal Palace secured an impressive victory at Old Trafford, thanks to Joachim Andersen's outstanding strike. However, Palace had rested several key players for that match and presented a different challenge on Saturday, delivering an excellent away performance. Palace took the lead after Tyrick Mitchell cleared Rasmus Hojlund's shot off the line. Andersen then brilliantly fired a first-time shot into the top corner from a free-kick. Despite Manchester United's relentless pressure, t hey struggled to breach Palace's defence. When they did manage to break through, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made crucial saves, first tipping Bruno Fernandes' dipping shot over the bar and then denying Hojlund's powerful header.
