The England captain opened the scoring after 18 minutes, calmly steering in from close range. Boca responded through Miguel Merentiel, who finished neatly midway through the second half to draw the Argentine side level.

With the match heading towards a draw, Kane turned provider, threading a pass into the path of Michael Olise. The former Crystal Palace winger clipped in a composed winner from the edge of the area with six minutes remaining.

Vincent Kompany’s side now need only a point against Benfica in their final group game to secure top spot, which could set up a last-16 encounter with Chelsea, depending on whether Enzo Maresca’s side qualify in second place. Chelsea currently sit second in the group after their 3–1 defeat by Flamengo.

There was cause for concern for Bayern, however, as Jamal Musiala was forced off just 25 minutes after coming on as a substitute, having picked up a knock.

Boca’s defeat ended a nine-game unbeaten run for South American clubs in the newly structured tournament. Yet the Argentine side still have a slim chance of progressing if they overturn a seven-goal deficit and Bayern beat Benfica.

Benfica had earlier thrashed Auckland City 6–0. The New Zealanders, who have shipped 16 goals in two games, are already eliminated.

Boca fans stole the show

The Argentinians created a fabulous atmosphere in the ground. They were still singing after the match even though their elimination from the competition has almost been confirmed.

Andrew, attending the matches in the United States as a neutral, said: "The South American fans are making this tournament really entertaining. They've brought a lot of colour and passion."

Matthew, a Bayern fan, added: "A good performance from our team in difficult conditions. Qualifying early gives us an opportunity to rotate players for the final group stage match."
