Premier League; Chelsea ease to first win of the season

Image
Chelsea 3 - 0 Luton Town From a Chelsea perspective, the big team news before kick-off was the presence of Moises Caicedo in the starting line-up for his full debut. He replaced the injured Carney Chukwuemeka. As expected before the match, Chelsea dominated possession throughout the game. It didn’t take long for the Blues to find a way past the defence and force the first save. A loose ball followed a set-piece dropped toward Sterling but his fierce volley was well held by Thomas Kaminski. It wasn't long before Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea a deserved lead, weaving his way through the Hatters defence to score a fine solo goal. The Blues had to be patient before securing the emphatic scoreline that the home side's dominance deserved. This began with Sterling netting his second after half-time by turning in Malo Gusto's low cross. Jackson then scored Chelsea's third goal via a similar route, Sterling providing the ball for him to slide in. Ultimately, this proved to

West Ham United 3 - 1 Chelsea It was a memorable afternoon at the London Stadium for West Ham fans. In the 67th minute, Hammers defender Nayef Aguerd, who opened the scoring with a header, was sent off for his second bookable offence. However, Chelsea couldn't force an equaliser and conceded a late third through Lucas Paqueta's penalty in the fifth minute of added time. <More Chelsea news and stories> How it all happened Agued scored for West Ham in the 7th minute to give the home side the lead. Premier League: Leeds United appoint new manager

Leeds United have finally named their new manager They have agreed terms with former Watford boss Javi Gracia to replace Jesse Marsch. They are currently 19th in the Premier League and host bottom club Southampton in their next game on Saturday. The club say Gracia has been appointed on a "flexible contract" and will take charge of the side against Saints "subject to obtaining the necessary work permissions". Scotland 2 - 2 Finland Scotland head off to Euro 2024 in a disappointing fashion after squandering a two-goal lead to draw with Finland at Hampden Park. An own goal from Arttu Hoskonen lifted spirits following a subdued start before Lawrence Shankland nodded home, ramping up the celebrations. The Tartan Army's party was put on hold when Benjamin Kallman pulled one back, and an 85th-minute penalty - awarded by the video assistant referee (VAR) - was slotted home by Oliver Antman. All eyes now turn to Munich as Scotland prepares for the daunting yet exhilarating task of taking on Germany, one of the tournament favourites, in their own backyard next Friday. You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below. The footage is from the Premier Sports YouTube account.  The second half came to life after a poor first 45 minutes. UCL: Madrid take charge against Chelsea

Image
Real Madrid 2 - 0 Chelsea Real Madrid comfortably beat Chelsea in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu in a match whose final scoreline could have easily been more emphatic. Chelsea didn't take advantage of a strong start. They started well under new caretaker manager Frank Lampard, with Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling going close early, only to be thwarted by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois playing against his former club. <This is the place to go for all Chelsea news and stories> Karim Benzema's tap-in gave Real boss Carlo Ancelotti a fantastic start against his former club. The holders then struggled to add to their lead before Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute for fouling Rodrygo as the Brazil forward threatened to go clean through on goal. Some positives to take for Chelsea. The Blues carried more of an attacking threat after the tepid performance against Wolves in Frank Lampard's first game back a

Premier League: Burnley relegated

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 1 Burnley Burnley's defeat in North London means they are heading back to where they came from 12 months ago. Having taken a surprise lead in the first half through Jacob Bruun Larsen’s well-taken strike, a Tottenham fightback thanks to goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven ended Burnley’s brave resistance and confirmed relegation.  A closer look at the match The first chance fell early for Spurs when Son played James Maddison through to the edge of the box. His shot was blocked by Charlie Taylor. Burnley were quick to head to the other end of the pitch. Wilson Odobert’s cross was met with a strong header by Vitinho but was brilliantly saved by Vicario and set the tone for some end-to-end action. Brennan Johnson was next up, forcing Aro Muric into another great stop at his near post. FA Cup: Blackburn shock Leicester

Image
Leicester City 1 - 2 Blackburn Rovers Championship promotion contenders Blackburn Rovers caused an FA Cup fifth-round upset by stunning 2021 cup winners Leicester City. Backburn's dynamic display, in which they should have scored more goals, gave them a place in the last eight for the first time in eight years. Having been denied by Daniel Iversen's flying save, Tyrhys Dolan curled past Leicester's Danish goalkeeper for the opener. Ryan Hedges then missed a gilt-edged opportunity to double the visiting side's lead at the start of the second period when he failed to hit the target from 10 yards out. This didn't prove costly as Sammie Szmodics wriggled clear to convert Rovers' second in the 52nd minute, while the midfielder also had a goal ruled out for offside. Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for the Foxes by slotting in from close range. However, it wasn't enough. Many fans would have thought there was a good opportunity of a cup run there.

UCL: Greatest Champions League semi-finals

Image
Let's take a look at some of the greatest Champions League semi-finals.  With the 2023 Champions League semi-finals just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to look back at some legendary matches at this stage of the competition.  From AC Milan to Manchester United and Didier Drogba to Zinedine Zidane, iconic clubs and players have come of age and built their modern mythology in these matches. However, which games were the best?  AC Milan v Monaco - 1994 The Champions League was still a very different competition when it officially changed its name from the European Cup in the earlier part of the 1990s.  In this game against Monaco, Milan went up early through Marcel Desailly but suffered a significant setback when Alessandro Costacurta was sent off after 40 minutes. However, they were determined not to let their advantage slip. In the end, they only held their lead but also added to it with further strikes in the second half. The season would only get better for Milan.

Premier League: Entertaining draw at Emirates Stadium

Image
Arsenal 2 - 2 Fulham Fulham earned a point at Arsenal thanks to Joao Palhinha. His first-time finish from a corner in the 87th minute earned the away side this draw.  The away side had Calvin Bassey sent off four minutes before that equaliser after he fouled Eddie Nketiah on the counter-attack. Before 3pm, the Emirates stadium was loud and boisterous before the match kicked off. However, that noise became an almost baffled silence.  Andreas Pereira got Fulham off to a flying start, scoring after just 57 seconds. He latched onto a loose ball from Bukayo Saka and fired in a curling shot with the Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale out of position. After Fabio Vieira was caught by Kenny Tete, Saka equalized from the penalty spot for the Gunners. Nketiah then scored Arsenal's second as they came from behind to take the lead , before Fulham had the final say.  As Fulham fans celebrated at the end of the match, Arsenal fans were perhaps slightly concerned that they are displaying the
