Wolves: 23/24 Season Review

Image
Let's explore how Wolves got on during their 2023/2024 campaign  It was the 146th season in the history of the club and their sixth consecutive season in the Premier League since they were promoted in 2018.  Before the season, they parted company with Julen Lopetegui by mutual agreement. Only a day later, the former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil was appointed head coach on a three-year deal. A closer look at all their match reports from the 2023/2024 season The campaign started with an unlucky 1-0 defeat against Manchester United . In this match, Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory.  Following the match, one Wolves fan told us: "We were brilliant throughout the match except for their finishing touches. Despite a summer filled with doubts and pessimism, We outperformed them for significant periods of the game. On another occasion, we could have secured a comfortable victory or at

Premier League: Garnacho stunner helps United to another win

Image
Everton 0 - 3 Manchester United Alejandro Garnacho scored an incredible goal in Manchester United's win against Everton, who were playing their first game after a 10-point deduction.  Video from  Manchester United - YouTube Garnacho's stunning third-minute goal, a bicycle kick, left the Goodison Park crowd in awe, and it came amidst protests from fans against the Premier League's decision to deduct those points. Everton had several chances to level the score in the first half, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin being the main threat. However, United's goalkeeper Andre Onana made crucial saves, and Garnacho's goal remained the only highlight of the first half. United introduced 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who made a clearance off the line. Everton's missed opportunities proved costly as Ashley Young was judged to have fouled Anthony Martial in the box, leading to Marcus Rashford confidently converting the penalty. Although Fernandes typically takes penalties for Unite

Pre Season: United and Betis entertain crowds in San Diego

Manchester United 3 - 2 Real Betis Manchester United lifted the Snapdragon Cup, at the stadium of the same name, after they deservedly beat Real Betis. After Iker Losada's opener for the opposition, Erik ten Hag's men had to come from behind to get the win. The Red Devils achieved this in style, scoring three first-half goals in a fantastic 13-minute spell. The first was scored by Marcus Rashford from the penalty spot. Amad then followed up with a screamer before Casemiro scored a tap in.  Diego Llorente's second-half header did make it a closer contest, at least in terms of the scoreline. From a United perspective, it was another night when the manager was able to give more valuable minutes to aa decent number of his squad. Could Casemiro be back to his best? It seems the Brazilian will now stay at United for at least another season. This shouldn't be a problem if Casemiro plays next season like he did against Real Betis. The 32-year-old midfielder was everywhere,

Euro 2024: Spain win against England in final

Image
England 1 - 2 Spain It just wasn't meant to be for England. England's hopes of ending 58 years of pain and disappointment were dashed as they lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final at Berlin's Olympiastadion. Gareth Southgate's team suffered heartbreak once again, falling to a late goal by Mikel Oyarzabal, which left them unable to end the long wait for success for the men's team in a second consecutive European Championship final. Spain took the lead just two minutes into the second half when Lamine Yamal set up Nico Williams, who beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a powerful low shot. England's captain, Harry Kane, struggled to find form and was substituted after an hour. Cole Palmer, who came on for Kobbie Mainoo, briefly revived hopes of a comeback with a composed left-footed strike in the 73rd minute. However, Spain ultimately clinched victory, as Oyarzabal converted Marc Cucurella' s cross four minutes from time, leaving England once again

Euro 2024: England name final squad for Germany

Image
England have confirmed their 26-man squad for the European Championships Gareth Southgate has revealed his final 26-man squad, and some notable names are missing. Manchester City's Jack Grealish, Manchester United's Harry Maguire, and Tottenham's James Maddison have all been left out. Burnley's goalkeeper James Trafford, Liverpool's defender Jarell Quansah, Everton's defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and Liverpool's midfielder Curtis Jones, who were part of the initial 33-player shortlist, have also not made the cut. Manchester United's Luke Shaw who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since mid-February, is part of the squad. This has come to the surprise of many but his experience and nature as one of England's best left-backs probably swung that in his favour. Euro 2024: England fight back yet again

Image
England 1 - 1 Switzerland England win 5-3 on penalties Trent Alexander-Arnold fired home the winning penalty after Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Ivan Toney had all kept their composure.  Jordan Pickford had previously set the tone by saving Switzerland's first penalty from Akanji, securing a tense shoot-out victory. England, who will now face the Netherlands in the semi-finals on Wednesday, had been at risk of a premature exit from the tournament in normal time. Breel Embolo had put Switzerland ahead in the 75th minute, sneaking past Kyle Walker to tap in Dan Ndoye's deflected cross from close range. Saka equalised shortly afterwards with a superb curling finish in off the post from outside the box, marking England's first shot on target. Gareth Southgate's side struggled during extra-time, enduring nerve-wracking moments as Xherdan Shaqiri hit the woodwork directly from a corner and Zeki Amdouni's shot was parried. The Three Lions find a way ag

Transfer Rumours: United linked with Gomes

Image
Let's explore another transfer rumour Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.  United are looking to sign a holding midfielder this summer and they have identified the £40million-rated Gomes as someone who can take them forward. Gomes has been watched by United on several occasions this season, most recently earlier this month when Wolves beat Fulham 2-1 at Molineux in the Premier League. Premier League news and stories: 2023/2024 Premier League: Wolves and Man United play out a classic  Wolves are aware there will be interest in Gomes over the next few months. One of his standout performances came when his side beat Treble winners Manchester City 2-1 earlier this season and scored both goals in a win by the same scoreline over Spurs last month. He fits the profile of new United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, now in charge of the club's football operations, who wants an end to the policy of spending exorbitant fees on star

Premier League: Man United drop points again

Image
AFC Bournemouth 2 - 2 Manchester United Manchester United's hopes of securing European football were dented again after they dropped one place to seventh following Newcastle United's 4-0 win over Tottenham earlier in the day.  They are currently two points clear of West Ham United having played one game less. They're 6 points ahead of Chelsea, however, the London side has played two games fewer.  A brief match report Bournemouth's positive start was rewarded by Dominic Solanke's goal in the 16th minute. Solanke got the better of Willy Kambwala and finished the ball confidently, low into the corner of the net. This goal motivated the home side further, as they continued to dominate the proceedings.  The home team missed several opportunities to score, and they ultimately paid the price when Fernandes scored from a pass by Alejandro Garnacho. Kluivert quickly restored the hosts' lead five minutes later with a straightforward pass from Marcos Senesi that exp

Euro 2024: Watkins sends England to final

Image
England 2 - 1 Netherlands I know that was then, but it could be again... England will face Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday following a last-minute goal from substitute Ollie Watkins that secured a win over the Netherlands. The Three Lions looked like they would be facing extra time for the third successive game after Harry Kane's first-half penalty equalised a stunning early strike from Xavi Simon. However, there was to be a dramatic twist. A superb late strike on the turn from the substitute Watkins sent England into their second successive European Championship final on a fantastic night in Dortmund. A chance now for Southgate and England to make history. England will play their first final on foreign soil since. The final of the 1966 World Cup and Euro 2021 took place at Wembley. True to their form in Germany, they reached the stage by coming from behind, enduring some tense moments, and eventually clinching victory through that late goal from Watkins. When

Euro 2024: England battle to win against Serbia

Image
England 1 - 0 Serbia Jude Bellingham inspired England to the start they hoped for at Euro 2024, netting the winning goal and delivering a stellar performance in their victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen. Bellingham's dream season continued, after clinching the Champions League in his debut campaign with Real Madrid, he showcased why he’s seen as England's latest superstar. The 20-year-old rose magnificently to meet Bukayo Saka 's deflected cross with a powerful header after 13 minutes, earning Gareth Southgate's side an early lead. Despite starting strongly with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, England fell into familiar patterns after the break, sitting back and allowing Serbia to press. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a crucial late save from Dusan Vlahovic to maintain their lead. Harry Kane nearly doubled England’s tally when his header from Jarrod Bowen's cross was superbly tipped onto the bar by Serbia's keeper, Predrag Rajkovic. Wh

PL News: Ten Hag to stay at Manchester United

Image
Manchester United are in discussions with Erik ten Hag about a new contract, having decided he will stay on as manager for next season. Following their end-of-season review, United concluded that Ten Hag is the right person to lead them forward under the new regime headed by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Ten Hag, 54, is keen to remain at the club and has had positive discussions with United regarding their review of the season. After winning the FA Cup , he was left in limbo for two-and-a-half weeks as United considered whether to replace him. However, they felt it was important for the new ownership to conduct a thorough assessment. While Ten Hag led United to their lowest-ever Premier League finish, in eighth place, and a group-stage exit from the Champions League, they also considered his achievement of securing two trophies in as many years, including a third-place finish in his debut campaign. Ten Hag attributed last season's struggles, which he described as "horrible,

UEL: United held by Dutch side

Image
Manchester United 1 - 1 Twente Christian Eriksen experienced both triumph and disappointment for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag’s side faltered at the beginning of their Europa League journey, drawing with Twente, the Dutch manager’s boyhood club. Eriksen put United ahead in the first half with a brilliant finish from inside the box. However, a determined Twente side capitalised on Eriksen's mistake when he was dispossessed by Sam Lammers just outside United’s penalty area. The former Rangers player wasted no time, unleashing a powerful shot that flew past Andre Onana. Ten Hag's men had chances to secure a late win, but Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was in fine form, denying Joshua Zirkzee’s left-footed attempt that seemed destined for the net. Earlier, Unnerstall had also made a spectacular reflex save to stop Mees Hilgers from scoring an own goal. Bruno Fernandes, United’s captain, came close as well, and substitute Kobbie Mainoo had a penalty shout waved away. Foll
