Brighton was treated to an amazing night as England broke their own tournament record to win 8-0 in what was originally perceived to be their biggest test of the group stages. This time, more than any other time, and against the world champions France, it felt very different. They were not outplayed. They did not retreat. Kane wrote his name into the history books in the 44th minute when he beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from the penalty spot for his 54th England goal. Declan Rice had earlier given England an early lead when he scored from close range after Kane's shot was blocked before the captain put his name in the record books.
