They were made to absorb early pressure as a determined start by Milan ensured the match began at a frenetic pace. Theo Hernandez fired marginally over with a ferocious strike and Brahim Diaz was denied by Andre Onana as Stefano Pioli's side attempted to undo the damage done by conceding two goals inside 11 minutes last week. Women's UCL: Arsenal left heartbroken

Image
Arsenal Women 2 - 3 VfL Wolfsburg Ladies Arsenal were knocked out in the Women's Champions League semi-finals with a crushing extra-time defeat by two-time winners Wolfsburg at the Emirates Stadium. A terrible mistake by defender Lotte Wubben-Moy gifted possession to Wolfsburg with minutes to go and unmarked substitute Pauline Bremer poked in a cross from close range. In front of a record crowd for a women's game in England, Arsenal put the 60,063 fans through an array of emotions before leaving them heartbroken after 120 minutes. Arsenal took an early lead through Stina Blackstenius after avoiding a video assistant referee (VAR) scare for a potential handball in the box by Wubben-Moy in the opening minutes. Wolfsburg then responded as returning captain Alexandra Popp - ruled out of the first leg with a calf injury - set up Jill Roord to make it 1-1 on the night and later headed the visitors in front. A Blackstenius close-range finish was ruled out by VAR shortly into the

UCL: Chelsea exit Champions League with a whimper

Image
Chelsea 0 - 2 Real Madrid (0-4 on aggregate) Chelsea went out of the Champions League with a whimper.  The current European champions dispatched them easily with another 2-0 victory in their quarter-final clash as Lampard failed to mastermind an almighty comeback. The home side had plenty of chances, with Marc Cucurella superbly denied by Thibaut Courtois in the closing stages of a positive first half as far as the hopeful hosts were concerned. However, it felt like only a matter of time before Carlo Ancelotti's side punished the Blues and in the 57th minute they did, as Rodrygo finished off a ruthless attack. He then bagged another in the dying embers, ending the contest, making it Chelsea's worst run of form in 30 years. UCL: Madrid take charge against Chelsea

Image
Real Madrid 2 - 0 Chelsea Real Madrid comfortably beat Chelsea in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu in a match whose final scoreline could have easily been more emphatic. Chelsea didn't take advantage of a strong start. They started well under new caretaker manager Frank Lampard, with Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling going close early, only to be thwarted by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois playing against his former club. <This is the place to go for all Chelsea news and stories> Karim Benzema's tap-in gave Real boss Carlo Ancelotti a fantastic start against his former club. The holders then struggled to add to their lead before Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute for fouling Rodrygo as the Brazil forward threatened to go clean through on goal. Some positives to take for Chelsea. The Blues carried more of an attacking threat after the tepid performance against Wolves in Frank Lampard's first game back a

UCL: Inter Milan in control of quarter-final

Benfica 0 - 2 Inter Milan Romelu Lukaku scored an 82nd-minute penalty as Inter Milan put themselves in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League after a deserved win away to Benfica. Nicolo Barella's downward header gave Inter the lead in the quarter-final first leg in Lisbon. Benfica struggled to dictate play in front of their own fans as Inter produced a defensive masterclass in Lisbon. This was almost reminiscent of their 2010 triumph with Jose Mourinho.  <Click here to find more news and stories from across Italy> Rafa Silva was denied by Andre Onana's first-half save before Inter's Netherlands defender Denzel Dumfries produced a crucial block from close range as Benfica pushed for an equaliser. UCL: Inter hold out against Porto

Image
FC Porto 0 - 0 Inter Milan (Aggregate: 0 - 1 ) Inter Milan fans are dreaming of Champions League success once again. The Italian side reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in more than a decade after surviving a late barrage of pressure at Porto to escape with a 0-0 draw which took them through 1-0 on aggregate. It was a disappointing night for the home fans at a sold-out Dragao stadium as the Portuguese champions tried in vain to wipe out the narrow deficit from the first leg in Italy. A disciplined Inter side seemed content to hold onto their lead and did not face a serious threat until added time.  Defender Pepe was then dismissed for a second yellow card and Inter joined city rivals AC Milan in the quarterfinal draw. This is the first time they have both reached the last eight since 2006. UCL: Another memorable European night for Chelsea

Image
Chelsea 2 - 0  Borussia Dortmund (Aggregate 2-1) It was a great night for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in what was Graham Potter's finest night as Chelsea manager. Raheem Sterling made the breakthrough after 43 minutes, firing past Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer after initially fluffing his shot. The goal that settled the tie and overturned Dortmund's 1-0 advantage from the first leg came in contentious fashion from the penalty spot after 53 minutes. Dortmund were furious when a VAR review penalised Marius Wolf for handball from Ben Chilwell's cross, and their sense of injustice heightened after Kai Havertz struck the post with his spot-kick only for a re-take to be ordered. Potter's revival Click here for more Chelsea news>>> Potter was under pressure after a dismal run of results following their outlay in the transfer market. UCL: Liverpool thrashed and facing trophyless season

Liverpool 2 - 5 Real Madrid Liverpool are facing a season without a trophy after being thrashed by Real Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Holders Real - who beat Liverpool in last season's final in Paris - became the first side to score five at Anfield in Europe despite going two goals down early on as Liverpool made a dream start to this last-16 tie. UCL: Spurs suffer narrow first-leg defeat

Image
AC Milan 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs suffered a narrow first-leg defeat in the San Siro Diaz nodded in early on after Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster had saved a Theo Hernandez shot and then superbly got a hand on the scorer's initial follow-up attempt. Antonio Conte's side looked relatively comfortable for long periods of the contest against the seven-time European champions. A young midfield pairing of Pape Sarr and Oliver Skipp deputised confidently for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (suspended) and Rodrigo Bentancur (injured). Not much attacking threat from the away side They were rarely able to build any attacking momentum with their front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. They were all well-shackled by an AC Milan side that was well-disciplined. Will Milan have regrets? Mian's only regret will be not to have put the tie beyond this depleted Spurs side. Can they get at least a draw in North London to see them qualify for the last eight of the compe

UCL Classics: Man United v Bayern Munich 1999

Image
Manchester United v Bayern Munich 1999 The first in a series of articles where we talk about some classic Champions League matches Background Manchester United went into the game having won the league and cup double and they were now chasing a historic treble. The quest for glory in Europe's premier competition had been the focus point of United's development since they qualified in 1993. There were some memorable encounters along the route to the final. That included an incredible comeback against Juventus. The match itself  United were without Paul Scholes and their captain Roy Keane who were both suspended. Mario Basler gave Bayern the lead after 5 minutes, and as the game developed, it started to look like they would win and United would fall short. There was to be a dramatic end to the game though. Goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Solskjaer in stoppage gave United a win that people will talk about forever.  The highlights can be found in the video above. Credit -

UCL: Chelsea cruise to win over AC Milan

Image
Chelsea 3 - 0 AC Milan This was an even more comfortable win for the Blues than the scoreline suggests. Graham Potter made two changes to his side, with Jorginho and Kai Havertz missing out due to slight injury problems, but both were okay for a place on the bench. Edouard Mendy returned among the substitutes, as Kepa Arrizabalaga continued in goal. Kalidou Koulibaly came into the defence to join Wesley Fofana and Thiago Silva in a back three. After a couple of close calls, it was midway through the first half that the breakthrough arrived. Thiago Silva quickly forced a save and a block when getting his head to a series of set-pieces, but on the third occasion Milan couldn't clear and Fofana was in the right place to put the ball in the net after a scramble around the penalty spot. Mason Mount thought he had made it two soon afterwards with a lovely chip over the keeper, but it was disallowed for offside. The home side pulled away to safety in the second half, though, as Pierr

UCL: Spurs lose in Lisbon

Sporting CP 2-0 Spurs Tottenham suffered our first defeat of the season at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday. Two late goals gave Sporting Lisbon all three points on matchday two in the UEFA Champions League. In an even and entertaining affair, it looked like the Premier League side was going to leave the Portuguese capital with a share of the spoils having matched the hosts for the majority of the game, only to concede in the 90th minute from a Paulinho header before Arthur Gomes slotted home with virtually the last kick of the game. Both goals came from Sporting substitutes. Brazilian duo Richarlison and Emerson Royal had half-chances but neither could get a telling touch on balls into the box and home goalkeeper Adan was able to gather on each occasion
