Euro 2024: England name final squad for Germany

Image
England have confirmed their 26-man squad for the European Championships Gareth Southgate has revealed his final 26-man squad, and some notable names are missing. Manchester City's Jack Grealish, Manchester United's Harry Maguire, and Tottenham's James Maddison have all been left out. Burnley's goalkeeper James Trafford, Liverpool's defender Jarell Quansah, Everton's defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and Liverpool's midfielder Curtis Jones, who were part of the initial 33-player shortlist, have also not made the cut. Manchester United's Luke Shaw who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since mid-February, is part of the squad. This has come to the surprise of many but his experience and nature as one of England's best left-backs probably swung that in his favour. FA Cup: Youngsters shine as United win the cup

Image
Manchester City 1 - 2 Manchester United Manchester United’s victory stopped Premier League champions City from claiming a second consecutive domestic double. United's win was forged through an impressive first-half performance that saw goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Garnacho capitalised on a mix-up between City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and defender Josko Gvardiol, leaving him with an open goal to score half an hour in. Nine minutes later, Mainoo capped off a sweeping move with a composed finish following a delicate touch from Bruno Fernandes. City inevitably ramped up the pressure in the second half, with Erling Haaland hitting the post, United keeper Andre Onana making a superb save from Kyle Walker, and Julian Alvarez missing a golden opportunity. City substitute Jeremy Doku pulled one back with four minutes remaining, but Ten Hag's side held firm to secure a famous victory and  clinch their 13th FA Cup, their first since 2016. Premier League: Reaction as City forced to hold on against Forest

Manchester City 2-0 Nottingham Forest  After Rodri's red card, Manchester City were forced to hang on to win Nottingham Forest, but they still maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season. Premier League: Spurs and City play out a thriller

Image
Manchester City 3 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur In a nail-biting six-goal spectacle at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham's Dejan Kulusevski stole the show with a stunning 90th-minute header, denying Manchester City a victory they thought was in the bag when Jack Grealish netted nine minutes earlier. However, the game ended in controversy as referee Simon Hooper called a foul on Erling Haaland, who had seemingly overcome a tackle and set up Grealish. Haaland's frustration lingered beyond the final whistle, with an animated response to something from the Tottenham bench as he stormed down the tunnel. Both teams got something out of this entertaining clash, with Tottenham initially taking the lead through Son Heung-min, only for their skipper to inadvertently redirect a cross into their own net shortly after. Phil Foden's clinical finish put City ahead at halftime, but Giovani Lo Celso's brilliant curler leveled the score in the second half. Yves Bissouma's error near the Spu

Premier League: Haaland dominates derby for City

They''ll move quickly on to their next test, which sees them travel to Cyprus to face Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday evening. United had conceded four goals by half-time.The Reds did respond in the second period with a strike from Antony and a double for Anthony Martial, but the damage was done by Erling Haaland and Phil Foden's hat-tricks. World Cup: England's journey comes to an end

Image
England 1 - 2 France Football won't be coming home for Christmas England are out of a World Cup but, this time, it was in a desperately agonising quarter-final defeat. This time, more than any other time, and against the world champions France, it felt very different. They were not outplayed. They did not retreat. Instead they lost a tie which they should have won, which they deserved to win and which will sear into Harry Kane - Harry Kane of all people - who missed the penalty kick that would have forced extra-time; Kane missed the penalty that would have confirmed him as England’s all-time record scorer, with 54 goals, one ahead of Wayne Rooney.  History beckoned but for Kane but it wasn't to be. At the end Gareth Southgate wrapped his arms around Kane but he was in another place, staring into the distance. It felt incredibly sad after a fine performance laced with controversy. It was another player that was key for France The pre-match debate centred on how England could st

Euro 2024 preview: Is it finally England's time?

Gareth Southgate's England have arrived in Germany, facing a crucial test to determine if they are genuine contenders or simply a team that falters when it matters most. Southgate’s tenure – whether it concludes at the end of Euro 2024 or continues beyond – should always be assessed against the chaos he inherited.  Appointed permanently in November 2016, Southgate has since led England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals. World Cup 2022: How England's journey came to an end  As the England players settle into their base in Germany, there is much to be hopeful about. Southgate has fostered a positive atmosphere within the squad, with players now enjoying representing their country without the heavy burden of expectations. He has also rekindled a sense of goodwill from the fans and the wider public towards the team and himself. This tournament carries a sense of urgency – a ‘now or never’ moment – following the World C

PL: Man City thrash Newcastle United

Chris Wood wasted a glorious early chance for Newcastle to add to City's nerves. They paid the price when Raheem Sterling headed Pep Guardiola's team in front after 19 minutes. Aymeric Laporte added a second before half-time after Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka fumbled Ilkay Gundogan's volley and Rodri made sure of the victory with a near-post header from Kevin de Bruyne's corner just after the hour mark. UCL reaction: Man City edge Real Madrid in classic first leg

Euro 2024: England group winners but questions remain

Image
England 0 - 0 Slovenia England secured a spot in the Euro 2024 last 16 as the top team in Group C. Gareth Southgate's squad showed some improvement compared to their dismal performance against Denmark, yet it still fell short of justifying their status as pre-tournament favourites. Their play was laboured, with only occasional flashes of quality, notably in the first half when a smooth passing sequence led to Bukayo Saka's goal. This was disallowed for offside. Conor Gallagher's inclusion failed to make an impact, resulting in his replacement at half-time. The introduction of Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo brought more urgency after the break. England struggled with creativity in a group where no team scored more than one goal in any game, marking a first in the competition's history. Denmark's 0-0 draw with Serbia saw them finish second, while Slovenia qualified as one of the best third-placed teams. There was good news for England elsewhere, as resu

Euro 2024: Denmark hold England

England 1 - 1 Denmark England wasted the chance to secure their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners after a draw against Denmark in Frankfurt. Pre match atmosphere in Frankfurt Gareth Southgate’s side would have topped Group C with a win after the earlier draw between Slovenia and Serbia.  Harry Kane scored in his fourth successive major tournament to give England an 18th-minute lead. Still, Denmark soon got an equaliser they deserved when Morten Hjulmand struck a thunderous 25-yard equaliser after 34 minutes. Phil Foden struck the post after the break and, while England are still at the head of their group, they must deliver vast improvements in their final group game against Slovenia.
