This player might be Brazilian, but like his friend Ronaldo, his impact across Europe was huge.  Icons: Ronaldo (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Let's explore Rivaldo's fantastic career A brief introduction Rivaldo played mainly as an attacking midfielder. However, he was also used as a second striker and occasionally as a wide midfielder or a winger. He was renowned for his bending free kicks, bicycle kicks, feints, and powerful ball striking from a distance. Rivaldo also had the ability to both score and create goals. In 1999, he won the Ballon d'Or and was named FIFA World Player of the Year. With his huge success, he is one of nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d'Or. UEL reaction: Man United exit Europa League

Image
Sevilla 3 - 0 Manchester United (5-2 on aggregate) For 80 minutes at Old Trafford last week, it was all going so well for Manchester United. Then it all fell apart. They were put out of their misery and dumped out of the Europa League quarter-finals following a dreadful second-leg performance in defeat by Sevilla. United were well below their best as they exited Europe with a whimper. The Spanish side were gifted the lead after eight minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri finished following an awful error from Harry Maguire, and Sevilla doubled their advantage shortly after half-time with a looping header from defender Loic Bade. Sevilla's win was complete nine minutes from time when En-Nesyri again capitalised on a shocking mistake, this time from goalkeeper David de Gea, to complete the win. United missed Bruno Manchester United's midfield suffered without Bruno Fernandes in Sevilla. After receiving a yellow card in the first leg at Old Trafford, Fernandes was suspended and miss

UCL: Chelsea exit Champions League with a whimper

Image
Chelsea 0 - 2 Real Madrid (0-4 on aggregate) Chelsea went out of the Champions League with a whimper.  The current European champions dispatched them easily with another 2-0 victory in their quarter-final clash as Lampard failed to mastermind an almighty comeback. The home side had plenty of chances, with Marc Cucurella superbly denied by Thibaut Courtois in the closing stages of a positive first half as far as the hopeful hosts were concerned. However, it felt like only a matter of time before Carlo Ancelotti's side punished the Blues and in the 57th minute they did, as Rodrygo finished off a ruthless attack. He then bagged another in the dying embers, ending the contest, making it Chelsea's worst run of form in 30 years. The home side gave a decent performance here and it was probably the best of Frank La

UCL: Madrid take charge against Chelsea

Image
Real Madrid 2 - 0 Chelsea Real Madrid comfortably beat Chelsea in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu in a match whose final scoreline could have easily been more emphatic. Chelsea didn't take advantage of a strong start. They started well under new caretaker manager Frank Lampard, with Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling going close early, only to be thwarted by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois playing against his former club. <This is the place to go for all Chelsea news and stories> Karim Benzema's tap-in gave Real boss Carlo Ancelotti a fantastic start against his former club. The holders then struggled to add to their lead before Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute for fouling Rodrygo as the Brazil forward threatened to go clean through on goal. Some positives to take for Chelsea. The Blues carried more of an attacking threat after the tepid performance against Wolves in Frank Lampard's first game back a

ECQ: Scotland shock Spain

Image
Scotland 2 - 0 Spain It was another raucous at Hampden Park as Scotland stunned Spain. Scott McTominay scored a double as the home side took control of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. The Manchester United midfielder, who also netted twice in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Cyprus, fired in the opener at Hampden Park after just seven minutes. This sent the Scotland crowd into an absolute frenzy. Spain looked for an immediate response. Dani Ceballos threaded a pass through to Mikel Oyarzabal but he could not get the ball under control and it rolled out. Scotland were then inches from a second in the 15th minute. John McGinn saw Stuart Armstrong on the edge of the box. However, his shot went just wide of the post. Ryan Christie and Lyndon Dykes also went close as Spain struggled to make their mark against Steve Clarke's side that looked a different level to the side that missed out on qualification to the World Cup. 🏁 HALF TIME AT HAMPDEN PARK!! @SEFutbol goes to the l

UEL: Man United cruise in Europa League

Image
Real Betis 0 - 1 Manchester United (Aggregate 1 - 5) After this clinical win, United will face another trip to Seville in the next round.  They cruised into the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a 5-1 aggregate win at Real Betis. After an open first half, Rashford put United ahead in the 55th minute with a thunderous long-range effort dipping into the bottom corner. The hosts had created plenty of chances before United opened the scoring as Betis' Joaquin saw his early curled effort hit the outside of the post. Erik ten Hag's side had done the hard work in Manchester last week and advanced as 5-1 winners on aggregate. UCL and UEL (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Rashford shines again when it mattered Rashford's impressive form continues. Since he returned from the World Cup, he has scored 19 goals in 24 appearances. He is already in his most productive season in front of goal and remains the highest scorer in the Europa League with six goals from eight matches.

UEL: Man United take commanding first-leg lead

Image
Manchester United 4 - 1 Real Betis Manchester United beat Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of the Europa League Round-of-16 clash. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the Reds in the sixth minute, with a rifling strike that emphatically flew past Claudio Bravo. Despite an excellent start by United, our goal would be cancelled out just after the half-hour mark due to the on-loan Ayoze Perez firing across David De Gea into the bottom corner.  Erik's reds prove too strong Antony restored United's lead with a trademark effort that curled beyond a stranded Bravo, who could only watch as it hit the top corner. Minutes later, Bruno Fernandes got in on the act from Luke Shaw's corner. The no.8 wasn't picked up as he wandered into the area to make it 3-1 on the night.  The final goal fell to Wout Weghorst, scoring his first in front of the Old Trafford faithful. Second-half substitute Facundo Pellistri was at the heart of the move, originally teeing up Scott McTominay who

UEL: Man United progress after a memorable European night

Image
Manchester United 2 - 1 Barcelona (United win 4-3 on aggregate) This was a tie that should have been a Champions League final.  Manchester United produced a stunning second-half comeback to reach the Europa League last 16.  Brazilian duo Fred and Antony, who came on as a half-time substitute, both drilled home low first-time shots in front of a bouncing Stretford End that had older United fans thinking back to a memorable night in 1984. It was a victory that looked so unlikely at half-time as Barcelona led thanks to Robert Lewandowski's 18th-minute penalty. Antony's arrival at half-time changed the course of the tie as it injected more pace into United's attacks. The Red Devils now move on to Wembley, where they will look to collect their first silverware since 2017. United will face Real Betis in the next round of the competition.  This was the reaction after full-time.  Incredible Scenes At Old Trafford As Manchester United Stars Celebrate Victory Over Barcelona - You

UCL: Liverpool thrashed and facing trophyless season

Image
Liverpool 2 - 5 Real Madrid Liverpool are facing a season without a trophy after being thrashed by Real Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Holders Real - who beat Liverpool in last season's final in Paris - became the first side to score five at Anfield in Europe despite going two goals down early on as Liverpool made a dream start to this last-16 tie. UCL: Real Madrid win Champions League (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Darwin Nunez's brilliant flick put Liverpool ahead after only four minutes before Mohamed Salah cashed in on Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' awful clearance to double their lead around 10 minutes later. It then all started to go very wrong Vinicius Junior's superb strike after 21 minutes pulled a goal back before Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson hacked a clearance straight at the Brazilian, holding his head in anguish as the ball looped behind him into the net in front of a shocked Kop End. It was at this point when Will, a Liverpool fan f

Premier League: Leeds United appoint new manager

Image
Leeds United have finally named their new manager They have agreed terms with former Watford boss Javi Gracia to replace Jesse Marsch. Marsch was sacked on 6 February but Leeds have faced several setbacks in their hunt for his replacement. The Spaniard Gracia took Watford to the FA Cup final in 2019. He then went on to manager at La Liga side Valencia and Qatari club Al Sadd. Can Garcia keep Leeds up? They are currently 19th in the Premier League and host bottom club Southampton in their next game on Saturday. The club say Gracia has been appointed on a "flexible contract" and will take charge of the side against Saints "subject to obtaining the necessary work permissions". Under-21s boss Michael Skubala has been in interim charge since Marsch's sacking despite club owner Andrea Radrizzani initially promising a quick appointment. Spain: Isco has contract cancelled

Image
There has been an interesting development with of La Liga's most decorated players. Sevilla have reached an agreement to terminate Isco's contract, just four months after signing the former Spain midfielder on a free transfer. He joined Sevilla on a two-year deal in August after long and successful spell with La Liga rivals Real Madrid. He signed from Malaga in 2013 and helped Real win the Champions League five times and La Liga three times. However, he has now been released after just 19 games for Sevilla, scoring once and claiming three assists. It will be certainly interesting to see where he ends up next. Could a Premier League club sign him? There will certainly be plenty of interest in signing a player with som much experience at the highest level of football. One Sevilla fan told us: "I'm always worried about these kind of transfers. When a player has been at a club like Real Madrid for so long, it can be very difficult to integrate into another side. World Cup: Spain lose on penalties

Image
This World Cup has seen another dramatic moment Morocco 0 - 0 Spain (Morocco win 3-0 on penalties) Achraf Hakimi made himself a hero with a cheeky chipped winning penalty as his country stunned Spain in a shootout after a goalless draw to reach their first-ever World Cup quarter-finals.  The two teams played out a dramatic draw after two hours of football and Spain failed to convert any of their three penalties. Morocco fans had been making themselves heard all game but the atmosphere in the stands did not match the battle on the pitch. What a moment for them. Let's explore how it all happened.     Spain kept the ball well and Morocco sat back plugging the gaps and there was very few clear-cut chances being created. Luis Enrique's side came closest to breaking the deadlock courtesy of Dani Olmo, who struck an arrowed drive from the angle which Bounou pushed away, and the goalkeeper also did brilliantly well to keep out Olmo's dangerous free kick late on.
