Icons: Romário

Image
It's time to explore another icon of the football world. This time it's Romário. Early career Romário was spotted playing for Olaria, a small club from the Rio de Janeiro suburb. He was first taken to the junior team of Vasco da Gama, where once promoted to the senior team, he won two state league titles in 1987 and 1988. This earned his first call-ups to the national team. He quickly came to international attention, becoming the top scorer at the 1988 Olympic football tournament. Move to Europe Like all exciting Brazilian attacking players, he was a man who wanted to prove himself in Europe. Shortly after the 1988 Olympics,  he moved to PSV Eindhoven, where he won the Eredivisie in 1989, 1991 and 1992. He started to develop a cult following across the continent, and it wasn't long before some of the world's biggest clubs were interested in signing him.  After a lot of deliberation, his next destination was to be Barcelona. The video below explores some of the best

Spain: Girona look the real deal

Barcelona 2-4 Girona Barcelona finished the weekend in fourth place in the La Liga table and are now seven points off the top thanks to a painful 4-2 loss. Throughout this match, Girona dominated and made a statement about their title credentials as they convincingly won this Catalan derby.  Highlights Check out the highlights from the match in the video below.  FC BARCELONA 2 vs 4 GIRONA | LALIGA 2023/24 MD16 (youtube.com) The opening 45 minutes were just as wild and entertaining as any neutral could hope for, with both teams playing really well with the ball and taking big risks in possession that left them extremely vulnerable at the back. The home side started as the better side and could have taken the lead within the first 10 minutes. However, one bad pass in midfield allowed Girona to counter-attack and Viktor Tsigankov gave Artem Dovbyk an easy tap-in to put the visitors in front.  The 2023 La Liga winners answered quickly after a great corner taken by Raphinha found Rober

Premier League: Fulham thrash West Ham

Fulham 5 - 0 West Ham United Raul Jimenez continued his impressive resurgence, scoring another goal as Fulham convincingly defeated a lackluster West Ham, marking their second five-goal triumph in just five days at Craven Cottage. The Mexican forward opened the scoring by heading in Joao Palhinha's cross, notching his fourth goal in five league games. Under Marco Silva's management, Fulham dominated the first half, with Willian adding a second from Andreas Pereira's cut-back and Tosin Adarabioyo out-jumping Kurt Zouma to head in the third from a corner. Despite Lukasz Fabianski denying substitute Harry Wilson, Fulham's dominance continued, culminating in them sealing their second 5-0 victory of the week. This awful performance from West Ham, devoid of energy and ideas, saw them overwhelmed within 18 minutes, leaving Fulham fans delighted with another stellar home display. Fulham, who struggled initially, now boasts 15 goals in their past four games, a stark contras

Premier League: An awful Saturday for Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth Dominic Solanke's early strike set the stage for Bournemouth's historic triumph at Old Trafford, intensifying the scrutiny on beleaguered Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Bournemouth secured their first victory at Old Trafford with second-half headers from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi within a five-minute span, marking a memorable milestone in the club's history. United faced the prospect of an even more dismal outcome, but a late goal by substitute Dango Ouattara was disallowed by the video assistant referee for handball during stoppage time. This defeat comes just three days ahead of United's crucial Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, a match they must win to advance to the last 16. It compounds the woes for Ten Hag, who recently received the Premier League's Manager of the Month award. With seven defeats in 16 league games and an equal number of losses and wins in all competitions, United's form has b

Premier League: Spurs and City play out a thriller

Image
Manchester City 3 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur In a nail-biting six-goal spectacle at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham's Dejan Kulusevski stole the show with a stunning 90th-minute header, denying Manchester City a victory they thought was in the bag when Jack Grealish netted nine minutes earlier. However, the game ended in controversy as referee Simon Hooper called a foul on Erling Haaland, who had seemingly overcome a tackle and set up Grealish. Haaland's frustration lingered beyond the final whistle, with an animated response to something from the Tottenham bench as he stormed down the tunnel. Both teams got something out of this entertaining clash, with Tottenham initially taking the lead through Son Heung-min, only for their skipper to inadvertently redirect a cross into their own net shortly after. Phil Foden's clinical finish put City ahead at halftime, but Giovani Lo Celso's brilliant curler leveled the score in the second half. Yves Bissouma's error near the Spu

Premier League: Garnacho stunner helps United to another win

Everton 0 - 3 Manchester United Alejandro Garnacho scored an incredible goal in Manchester United's win against Everton, who were playing their first game after a 10-point deduction.  Video from  Manchester United - YouTube Garnacho's stunning third-minute goal, a bicycle kick, left the Goodison Park crowd in awe, and it came amidst protests from fans against the Premier League's decision to deduct those points. Everton had several chances to level the score in the first half, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin being the main threat. However, United's goalkeeper Andre Onana made crucial saves, and Garnacho's goal remained the only highlight of the first half. United introduced 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who made a clearance off the line. Everton's missed opportunities proved costly as Ashley Young was judged to have fouled Anthony Martial in the box, leading to Marcus Rashford confidently converting the penalty. Although Fernandes typically takes penalties for Unite

Premier League: Potentially vital win for Luton Town

Image
Luton Town 2 - 1 Crystal Palace Luton manager Rob Edwards has expressed his desire for his players not to "throw a celebration" following Jacob Brown's late goal against Crystal Palace.  Brown's goal in the 81st minute secured Luton's first home triumph in the Premier League this season.  The game only came to life in the second half, with one of the few noteworthy moments in the initial period being Odsonne Edouard's disallowed goal due to the ball bouncing off Luton defender Tom Lockyer and onto the hand of the Palace striker. This narrow escape injected energy into Luton, and Teden Mengi capitalized on a loose ball in the box, breaking the deadlock with a poke-in after a corner flick-on. This was the first moment on what turned out to be an exciting 10 minutes.  What a way for @TedenMengi to mark his first goal in senior football. 🔥 pic.twitter.com/ghCYYe1Y5Z — Luton Town FC (@LutonTown) November 26, 2023 More Luton Town news from eurosuperfootb
