World Cup: England's journey comes to an end

Image
England 1 - 2 France Football won't be coming home for Christmas England are out of a World Cup but, this time, it was in a desperately agonising quarter-final defeat. This time, more than any other time, and against the world champions France, it felt very different. They were not outplayed. They did not retreat. Instead they lost a tie which they should have won, which they deserved to win and which will sear into Harry Kane - Harry Kane of all people - who missed the penalty kick that would have forced extra-time; Kane missed the penalty that would have confirmed him as England’s all-time record scorer, with 54 goals, one ahead of Wayne Rooney.  History beckoned but for Kane but it wasn't to be. At the end Gareth Southgate wrapped his arms around Kane but he was in another place, staring into the distance. It felt incredibly sad after a fine performance laced with controversy. It was another player that was key for France The pre-match debate centred on how England could st

The 2023/2024 season will probably go down as one of the most iconic in the Bundesliga's history. The season began on 18 August 2023 and concluded on 18 May 2024.  On 14 April 2024, Bayer Leverkusen were crowned champions for the first time with five matches to spare following a 5–0 win over Werder Bremen.  Theyy would go onto become the first Bundesliga team in history to finish a season unbeaten, ending the campaign with a record of 28 wins and six draws. They would also go onto win the German Cup and reach the Europa League final. It was in that Europa League final match where they lost their only game of the season. Let's explore some key stories match reports from the season.  In August, it was announced that Bayern Munich had signed Harry Kane. The transfer was completed for an initial sum of around 100 million euros (£86.4 million), and there was believed to be additional provisions for performance-related bonuses.  At the time of the announcement, we spoke to a num

Women's Euro 2022: England thrash Sweden

Image
England 4 - 0 Sweden A few words 24 hours after an amazing night in Sheffield. England reached their first major women's tournament final since 2009 in emphatic fashion as they put four past Olympic finalists Sweden at Euro 2022 in Sheffield. The Lionesses extended their unbeaten run to 19 games under manager Sarina Wiegman. It was a senstational match from start to finish in Sheffield as Sweden piled on the pressure in the opening 25 minutes. England quickly dismantled them with ruthless finishing and a touch of class. Substitute Alessia Russo once again produced a moment of magic when her instinctive backheel made it 3-0 to England only 11 minutes after her introduction. Check out some of the best reaction to that backheel: One fan told us: "That was amazing. The best moment of the tournament so far. Another tweeted: "Did that just happen? This Twitter user added: "Still not over the AUDACITY of this. Think women can’t play football? How about a backheel nutmeg

Euro 2024 preview: Is it finally England's time?

Image
Gareth Southgate's England have arrived in Germany, facing a crucial test to determine if they are genuine contenders or simply a team that falters when it matters most. Southgate’s tenure – whether it concludes at the end of Euro 2024 or continues beyond – should always be assessed against the chaos he inherited.  Appointed permanently in November 2016, Southgate has since led England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals. World Cup 2022: How England's journey came to an end  As the England players settle into their base in Germany, there is much to be hopeful about. Southgate has fostered a positive atmosphere within the squad, with players now enjoying representing their country without the heavy burden of expectations. He has also rekindled a sense of goodwill from the fans and the wider public towards the team and himself. This tournament carries a sense of urgency – a ‘now or never’ moment – following the World C

ECQ: France start as they mean to go on

France 4 - 0 Netherlands Kylian Mbappe scored his first goals as France captain. The World Cup finalists began their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a fine win against the Netherlands. France were ahead after just two minutes when Antoine Griezmann curled in from Mbappe's pass. Defender Dayot Upamecano made it 2-0 six minutes later as he bundled in. Mbappe then scored again for France when he drove in, before powering home his second late on. Griezmann had reportedly been unhappy at being overlooked for the captaincy role given to Mbappe, but there were no signs of friction between the pair as they celebrated Mbappe's first of the night in the 21st minute. There is a lot of positive team spirit amongst these players.  We can also see that they have recovered from the heartbreak of losing the World Cup Final.  World Cup: Argentina triumph after classic final (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Kylian Mbappé has now scored more goals for France than Karim Benzema. Transfer Rumours: Karim Adeyemi linked with move from RB Salzburg

Image
Reports from around Europe have indicated that Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have all expressed an interest in RB Salzburg and Germany striker Karim Adeyemi It is believed that the Austrian side will only accept a bid of between 30 million and 40 million Euros. Is he worth it? Take a look at this video from LUTYHD on YouTube. How good is he? In 65 games for RB Salzburg, he has scored 21 goals. This is a decent record for a player so young. He actually started his youth career at Bayern Munich but had to leave due to a contract dispute. Adeyemi back at Bayern? Many with Bayern still believe he could have a career at the Bundesliga giants and they see him as Lewandowski’s possible successor. Others believe it could actually be that the Germany international is being viewed as more of a potential heir to Kingsley Coman’s spot in the squad. There does to be some uncertainty around the Coman's long-term future.  Bayern appears to be looking for alternative

Euro 2024 preview: Can Scotland do more than just boogie

Image
"Yes sir, I can boogie..." Can Scotland achieve what they've never done before by advancing from the group stage in a major tournament? After successfully qualifying from a challenging group that included Spain and Norway, hopes were high for such an achievement. However, Steve Clarke’s team then endured a run of seven games without a win (before a hard-fought victory against Gibraltar). While defeats to France, England, the Netherlands, and Spain were expected, losing to Northern Ireland was more concerning. For the first time in a while, the team appeared deflated. This dip in confidence might not be entirely detrimental. Overconfident Scots often struggle. In 1978, the team left for the World Cup amid great fanfare but failed to deliver. Clarke has assembled a capable side that should believe they can finish above Hungary and Switzerland, though they still lag behind the group’s standout team, Germany, in terms of overall ability.
